Welcome to the Purple Mountain’s Crested Butte Vacation Travel Blog

To help you make the most of your vacation, this page is designed to give me an opportunity to share with you all that is going on in Crested Butte. As I get out on the trails or head out around town, I will periodically add my activities to this page. Feel free to make comments or ask questions. One of the big reasons I love running a bed and breakfast in Crested Butte is that I enjoy sharing all the great things that this town and the surrounding wilderness have to offer.

Snodgrass Trail
May 31, 2009

This trail works great for both hiking and mountain biking. Snodgrass Trail can be made into a 13 mile loop for mountain bikers coming from town or a short out and back trip for day hikers who drive up to the trail head. It is a bit of a climb, but your hard work has its rewards. As this trail winds its way around the mountain you will find it offers an incredible perspective of Mount Crested Butte. In this Photo you can see the slopes of Mount Crested Butte as the snows have almost completely melted away. Along this trail you can also find a wide variety of wildflowers growing.

Strand Hill and the Brush Creek Valley
May 27, 2009

On this particular day I created a 21 mile loop by adding on the Whetstone Vista Trail and Strand Hill to the Upper Loop before heading back to town. This photo was taken at the beginning of the Strand Hill climb out Brush Creek. It is roughly a 2.25 mile climb up before you get to one of my favorite downhill rides in the early season. Brush Creek is a great area for hiking and biking. It offers a variety of trails and access to some incredible wilderness. I spend a good amount of time not only biking around here, but doing incredibly scenic hikes to Twin Lake and climbing the peak of Teocalli.

The Upper Loop
May 27, 2009

The Upper Loop Trail starts at the end of my street, wonders up the Recreation Trail to Mount Crested Butte then offers a variety of options as you head back down to town on single track. Because of all the options it offers this trail is great for the immediate mountain biker and the more experienced.

Lower Loop
May 25, 2009

Wow, what a start to a wonderful summer in Crested Butte, Colorado. The snows are melting, the aspen are sprouting new leaves and the flowers are starting to bloom. I have been getting out to play on the trails and wanted a chance to share some of my pictures with you. This picture was taken along the Lower Loop Trail right outside of town. The Lower Loop is a great trail to get those legs going again whether you are mountain biking, hiking or jogging. The thing I love about this trail is that there is not a lot of elevation gain so one can enjoy this trail without too much effort as it wonders along the Slate River. If you go far enough on this trail you will get to the Oh Be Joyful Falls. This time of year kayakers are traveling from all over to paddle these waters. I myself find this a little crazy since the river is a series of continuous falls and hazards, but I love to watch these brave souls demonstrate their talents.

When do the Leaves Change in Crested Butte?
May 20, 2009

Not an easy question to answer. The peak of the fall season is incredible here, but it is short lived and thus hard to predict. We have one of the best falls in Colorado because of Kebler Pass. This Pass is claimed to have the largest Aspen Forest in the world. Because Aspens are connected by their roots, it also makes this forest the second largest living organism in the world. So when the leaves change, they change together creating a pretty cool effect when viewed from a mountain side or top. I would say that the peak of the season lasts somewhere between 7 to 10 days around the end of September. Now this is nowhere near a sure prediction. The amount of rain leading up to the fall colors and even the storms during the turning of the leaves change things dramatically. For me personally, I enjoy the changing of colors, but I really enjoy when the leaves are past their peak and I am hiking through the woods on a carpet of red from all the fallen leaves.
