Crested Butte Vacation Travel Blog

Welcome to the Purple Mountain’s Crested Butte Vacation Travel Blog

To help you make the most of your vacation, this page is designed to give me an opportunity to share with you all that is going on in Crested Butte. As I get out on the trails or head out around town, I will periodically add my activities to this page. Feel free to make comments or ask questions. One of the big reasons I love running a bed and breakfast in Crested Butte is that I enjoy sharing all the great things that this town and the surrounding wilderness have to offer.
Purple Mountain

Al Johnson Uphill / Downhill Race
March 27, 2012

This race has a long standing tradition here in Crested Butte. Yes, it is a telemark race that requires the participants to skin up and ski down some extreme terrain. But more importantly everyone dresses in their best costumes. Almost any event seems to come with costumes in Crested Butte but this is the one that everyone spends the year planning for. It is always a great event for spectators! (However, if you are up for the challenge you can participate.) Here is a shot at the finish line which this year was right next to the Paradise Warming Hut Bar. And what a perfectly sunny day to sit outside and enjoy!

Big Head Todd and the Monsters at FestEVOL
March 18, 2012

Today we had some late season snow that added 4 more inches to our ski day. Guster opened for the FestEVOL shows today. As the show went on the snow just came down harder. The bands were great sports about it dressing in ski gear to fight the elements. As Big Head Todd and the Monsters played it started to really dump but no one was willing to leave until it was over. Thank you EVOL Burritos for another great event!!!

Skiing Early Season in the Backcountry
December 10, 2009

Crested Butte is surrounded by incredible backcountry skiing that is accessible for months before and after the ski season at the resort. Though people were getting out before Halloween this year, I did not get out there until November 9th. On this day I was up in the Paradise Divide area skiing Halloween Bowl on Mount Baldy. If you are interested in skiing in the backcountry you can hire a guide through us and even take avalanche courses. Just give us a call or drop us an email and we will help you out.

Cross Country Skiing Before Halloween
October 30, 2009

It is always great to be able to get out skiing early in the season. As soon as we get enough snow they start to groom cross country trails up at Lilly Lake which is located just outside of town. I hit the trails before Halloween this year. With several miles to explore, this is a great way to start a season. These trails will be maintained until Thanksgiving.
